A Beautiful Lawn Doesn’t Happen By Itself


  • Before you start shopping, make sure you research online to find out what are the choices available to you and what kind of mattress you are interested in. For example, firm or plush mattress, or special mattresses such as those with memory foam or latex.
  • If you have any medical condition, it is advisable for you to talk to your doctor first. But do bear in mind that your doctors are not mattress experts, but he/she knows your medical conditions better, and it may be useful for them to provide you some sort of tips or advice.
  • When you are trying out a mattress, make sure that you lie down on it, preferably with your normal sleep position. For instance, sleeping by the side or sleeping on your back. Do not just sit on the mattress to determine if it is suitable for you. Take as much time as you like to try on the mattress. A good gauge will be for at least 10 to 15 minutes. While testing on the mattress, focus your attention on the spot on your body which need the most support, that is your back. If you are shopping as a couple, both of you should try out the mattress together. Avoid buying mattress on behalf of someone, as it may not be suitable to them.
  • Always ask to try on three types of comfort level mattresses if the salesperson doesn’t offer you one. Ask to try out a firm, a medium firm and a plush mattress, so that you are able to determine what kind of mattress comfort feel you prefer. Once you found the most comfortable type of mattress, ask to see more of that kind.
  • There is a myth believing that a firm mattress is the best for supporting your back. Be cautious on that statement. It is not always the case that a firm mattress is more supportive of your back. Research has shown that the best mattress for low back pain is a medium firm mattress rather than a firm mattress. Do note that there is a difference between a mattress with firm support and a mattress with firm feel. A firm support mattress may come with a comfortable feel. The level of comfort is subjected to personal preference. The key lies in the spring system. Do try out before buying.
  • Check with the salesperson on the warranty details. A good mattress should come with a 10 year full warranty. There are some brands in the market which offer 10 years limited warranty, in which you are required to pay for a certain % of the mattress value depending on the years of usage.   • Buying a mattress is a big investment. Remember to protect it. It is strongly advisable for you to get a mattress protector, the best being the waterproof kind, so that you are assured that your mattress is protected against any possible soiling or stains.

How to have a good night sleep?

  • Turning down lights about an hour before bed to signal to the body that it’s time to relax.
  • Stay away from the computer, iPad, and smart phone before you go to bed. As the blue light emitted by these devices seems to trick the body into thinking its daytime.
  • Meals have to be taken at least three hours before bedtime. Liquids will also need to be limited during the hours before sleep. However, having a small snack that includes protein and carbohydrate shortly before bedtime can be beneficial.

  • A cool room temperature or a ventilated room with fresh air, a clean room, a dark and quiet room, is important for a good night’s sleep too.
  • Having a comfortable clean sheet will certainly complement the rest of the points listed above to improve your sleep.
